Tips on Painting Your Wood Lattice

Painting will not only make your wood lattice look brand new but will also shield it from weathering. Eventhough applying paint to lattice may be tedious due to the crack where the wood strips cross, the result is worth the frustration.

Surface Preparation

Spray water to wood lattice to remove old lattice debris and dirt. For stains and thick dirt use a soap and water solution. Dry the wood completely. For treated lattice, let the wood to fully dry for sixty days. After the wood lattice is clean and dry, smoothen the section where the wood splintered by sanding.

Spray/Brush

One advantage of spraying paint is that it can completely coat the lattice with paint and could not miss even the crevices and corners. When spraying, lean the wood lattice onto a surface. It’s much easier to spray when you’re standing than bending over a surface. When painting with paintbrush or roller, you have to work in small sections at a time being sure that corners and crannies are coated completely. To avoid drips, don’t overload your brush with paint.

Prime and Paint

Priming is done to prevent the first coating of paint from soaking up and to cover up stains that can bleed through paint. Apply latex primer to your wood lattice. For topcoat, apply exterior latex paint. Let the coat to dry fully for 6-8 hours before to the second coat.

Spray Technique

Before pushing the spray button, move your arm in a spraying movement. When you paint, hold the sprayer 12-14 inches away from the wood lattice. Paint with a continuous arm spraying movement and release the spray button only after it is off the lattice. Start by horizontally passing over the wood lattice, spraying paint on the lattice from alternating angles. Spray continually in this manner until the lattice surface is coated completely. Allow paint to dry. Use primer followed by two coats of paint.
