Best Wood to Use in Fences

There are a lot of different kinds of timber used for building a fence. The following are some of the most ideal kinds of timber that are sure to last for many years:

Redwood

This type of wood can be used for any part of the the fence but different grades could be used for different parts. For the panels, lower grade Redwood is fine. For fence posts, it’s usually better to use clear-heart or construction-heart timber grades for their durability. Usually, this wood will consist of deep red hues and will be highly resistant to rot and borers. To keep the colour and prolong the life of a fence, it’s best to treat the wood with a finish, either clear or stain finish. If the wood is left unstained, the fence can turn gray in colour. Redwood is a softwood that is the most expensive timber used in building fences and decks.

Cedar

Cedar is available in different wood grades. The natural acids and oils it extremely uninviting to insects. It is also naturally resistant to rot. It also warps less than other softer types of wood used in fencing. Cedar is almost half the cost of Redwood and twice the cost of pressure treated wood. Cypress Bald Cypress or Southern Cypress is a common material for building a fence usually used as substitute for Redwood and Cedar. It also has a tan or red colour but a lot lighter than Redwood, with all the same decay and insect resistance properties. Cypress could be used in ornamental and structural parts of your fence.

Pressure-Treated Wood This type of wood is mostly Southern yellow pine and usually the least expensive kind of timber to use in fencing (often half the price of Cypress). The most common chemicals used to treat wood include: Copper Azole (CA), Alkaline Copper Quaternary (ACQ), and Micronized Copper Quaternary (MCQ). Often, pressure treated timber will last for 20 years and beyond, and come with a warranty.
